A surgical intervention is required in cases of inborn abnormality in the position of the ear hole. Ears correction is a procedure used to reduce large or protruding ears (so called ‘flapped ears’) by setting the ears back closer to the head as well as molding, shaping and/or removing cartilage.

This procedure generally involves reforming the cartilages that shape the ears, to pull them in, and reduce the protrusion. Sutures are placed in the cartilage on the back side of the ear to maintain the new position. Incisions and the resulting scars are well concealed on the back of the ear, so that there is no visible scarring.

The surgery begins with a small incision in the natural fold just behind the ear. Then the necessary amounts of cartilage and skin is removed to achieve the right effect. The cartilage is trimmed and shaped into a more desirable form and then pinned back.

The time duration of the operation is 60 min.

The bandage and the stitches are removed after 7-10 days. Swelling subsides after 3-4 weeks.

There is not precise age for undergoing this kind of operation. It can be performed at any age after the ears have reached their full size. However, the most suitable is the age of 6 when the growth of the ear cartilage is completed.

This surgery is also often performed on elderly people.

Patients should return to normal social life in 10 days.

The scars after the operation are fine and unnoticeable, hidden behind the ear.

The anaesthesia of the operation is local or general, depending on patient’s choice. If the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, it may be necessary to spend 24 hours in the hospital so that your recovery process can be monitored by a medical staff.
